Broadband Types
Technology is rapidly advancing and ever changing. Each year, companies continue to announce faster and more reliable solutions.
The material that follows provides an overview of the more prevalent technologies employed to deliver high-speed Internet (broadband) service to consumers and most businesses in the United States. There are endless writings available on the Internet if additional depth on any of these technology types is desired.
As an overall perspective, the LinkWYOMING broadband mapping and planning initiative has been and continues to be technology and provider ‘agnostic’ in that the initiative favors no one technology or provider. Rather the focus of the State’s mapping and planning process is to determine what broadband services are available, what current/foreseeable needs exist and to support the consideration of solutions to those priorities—regardless of the technology.
The great thing about broadband is that it is not necessary to understand the terminology or intricacies of how it works in order to take advantage of its endless benefits. The following descriptions are provided to allow you to understand as little (the basics) or as much (beyond the basics) about broadband’s behind-the-scenes technologies as you care to.
